History of the Tippmann and the 98 Custom

Tippmann Sports was founded in 1986 by Dennis Tippmann Sr., a paintball enthusiast with a background in manufacturing. The company began producing innovative paintball markers and quickly gained a reputation for their quality and durability.

The Tippmann 98 Custom was first introduced in 1998 as a reliable and affordable option for players of all levels. Over the years, the 98 Custom has remained a staple in the paintball community due to its dependability and versatility.

The original “model 98” internally utilized a metal power tube internal, which raised the weight quite a lot. The modern upgrades where few and far between as well, requiring pretty hefty millwork. but that thankfully all changed.

Since its release, the Tippmann 98 Custom has seen numerous updates and improvements. These include the addition of the Anti-Chop Technology (ACT) system, improved air efficiency, and the introduction of various accessories for customization.

Tippmann 98 Custom Review

The Tippmann 98 Custom is a best-selling paintball gun that has gained popularity for its reliability, durability, and customizability. As an entry-level paintball gun, it is built from cast aluminum, making it extremely durable and able to withstand rough treatment. Although some parts are made of plastic, they rarely break. The gun has been refined over the years and is now in its third incarnation, the Platinum Series, which offers improved servicing and repair options.

Two main versions of the Tippmann 98 Custom are available: the 98 Platinum Series Ultra and the 98 Platinum Series ACT (Anti Chop Technology). The ACT version features an additional spring that prevents paintballs from being chopped during firing. While the ACT version does reduce paint breakage, it is not entirely foolproof. Upgrading to a Cyclone hopper can further minimize paint chopping.

The Custom offers numerous customization options, including an electronic trigger for real full-auto firing, a response trigger to increase the rate of fire, and a Cyclone hopper for automatic feeding. Additionally, the gun is compatible with a wide range of factory Tippmann parts, such as the flatline barrel. It is recommended to only use factory Tippmann parts for upgrading the gun, as aftermarket parts from other companies may compromise its performance.

In summary, the 98 Custom is a reliable, durable, and highly customizable paintball gun that caters to both beginners and experienced players. With its rugged design, ease of servicing, and a multitude of upgrade options, the Tippmann 98 Custom is an excellent choice for anyone looking to get into paintball or to enhance their game.

Tips and tricks

Some tips we have found for using the Tippmann 98 Custom effectively in gameplay. Here is a detailed tips and tricks section based on some of our experience:

Maintenance and Care

Regularly disassembling and cleaning your Tippmann 98 Custom will ensure long lasting performance for years to come. We always apply oil to all the O-rings during reassembly to maintain smooth operation and avoid any cracking of the rubber. Avoid using cheaper aftermarket parts for upgrades, as they may negatively impact the gun’s performance. Factory Tippmann parts are always very reliable, but you don’t only have to stick with Tippmann.

Using the Anti Chop Technology (ACT) version

Although ACT reduces paint breakage, it’s not entirely foolproof. To further minimize paint chopping, we recommend upgrading to a Cyclone hopper. This ensures optimal loading of your paintballs and further reduces any possibility for balls breaking in the loading process of the gun.

Customization and Upgrades

To enhance your gun’s firing capability, consider upgrading with an electronic trigger or a response trigger. This will increase your rate of fire, along with the addition of adding a Cyclone hopper for automatic feeding. If you want to improve your shooting accuracy consider upgrading with a new barrel, J&J makes a great 14″ for the 98 Custom that is made with ceramic.

Reassembling and Servicing Tips

When reassembling the gun, ensure that all internal parts are correctly positioned. Also, when reattaching the front sight, make sure the pin is inserted in the furthest hole to the left, and the spring is properly seated.

By following these tips and tricks, you can ensure that your Tippmann 98 Custom paintball gun continues to perform at its best and provides an enjoyable paintball experience. Regular maintenance, proper upgrades, and understanding the gun’s features will help you make the most of this reliable and durable paintball gun.

Comparison with other paintball guns

While the Tippmann 98 Custom shares similarities with other paintball guns, such as a semi-automatic firing mechanism and the ability to use CO2 or HPA, it stands out for its durability, customization options, and ease of maintenance. However, more advanced markers may offer higher firing rates and air efficiency, but lack the sweet sweet lower price tag the Tippmann 98 Custom offers.

The construction and reliability coupled with the possible customization options cater to a variety of play styles. Its user-friendly design makes the gun suitable for all skill levels, and especially caters to players that are just getting into the sport. Although it is heavier than some other paintball markers, you really don’t worry about throwing the gun around or diving for cover with the 98. There is pretty much no question that it will be able to take whatever beating you throw at it. There is no doubt though the 98 is less air-efficient compared to more advanced paintball guns, but as you grow with the gun this is a normal thing you will grow alongside.

How to Perform Maintenance on the Tippmann 98 Custom Paintball Gun

  • Remove the six bolts holding the gun together (the front grip bolt is longer than the rest).
  • Remove the front grip.
  • Remove the cap on the bolt handle.

Step 3: Separate the gun halves

  • Take out the ball detent.
  • Reattach the trigger guard.
  • Remove the rear sight and end cap.

Step 6: Reassemble the gun

  • Apply oil to all the O-rings.
  • Reattach the front bolt to the power tube, followed by the rear bolt.
  • Insert and rotate the linkage arm so it sits flat.
  • Place the drive spring and rod back, followed by the end cap and O-ring.
  • Ensure the O-ring sits in the correct groove for the receiver to fit properly.
  • Reattach the rear sight, ball detent, and front sight components.
  • Carefully place the left half of the receiver back onto the gun.

Step 7: Secure the gun halves

  • Replace the six bolts and tighten them snugly, but not too tight to avoid stripping the threads.
  • Reinsert the front grip.
  • Replace the handle’s rubber piece.

Step 8: Final reassembly
