7-man Pro bracket to include divisional teams
January 15, 2009 in USPL
Readers have been emailing for information as to what went on during the 7-man owners meeting that recently took place. The jist of the meeting; 7-man is alive and kicking. One of the more interesting rumors to surface from the meeting is that the PRO-owned league is rumored to be allowing several divisional teams to buy PRO franchises in the new league.
The first and most questionable addition is Rockstar Explicit, a division 2 team that failed to make the top 8 at NPPL San Diego. Not only was the team at the meeting but they are rumored to be playing PRO in 2009. The teams qualifications include …. and agreeing to sell 250 “rockstar egos”. Riiiiighht..
Also seen entering the meeting room was Bosch from NXE (inc.)/1UP. We don’t know whether he was at the meeting on official NXe business or if he was representing the 1UP/NXE (inc) team that filled in for Philly Americans at NPPL SD. Considering that the meeting was composed of PRO OWNERS, one can easily conclude that Bosch was working to secure the 1UP teams 2009 Pro Spot. Prior to jumping into the PRO mix (NPPL SD), 1up was a respected division 2 team who retired after the 2007 season. During the hiatus a few members of the team were seen mixing it up during the 2008 season in D1 and Semi Pro divisions.
Another divisional team said to be mixing it up in the pro bracket is RAGE D2. The team did exceptionally well during the 2008 season and finished the season off as D2 series champs. Word on the street is that Art is restructuring his pro squad and replacing the weaker members with several of his d2 champions to make a go for the new “Major League Paintball” series.
With that being said, it should be interesting to see how these divisional teams hold up against established Pro franchises (Dynasty, Arsenal, Impact, Bushwackers, Infamous, etc.). With the exception of Miami Rage, it really begs the question of whats best for PRO paintball; Running a smaller conference (ie 12 legit teams) or a larger conference of teams that can “afford it”? Will Rockstar Explicit finish the season as 2009’s Team Ultimate? Share your thoughts or place your bets in the comments below!
